Who we are

The Burke & Wills Historical Society was incorporated by a group of enthusiasts who share an interest in the Burke and Wills Expedition of 1860-1 and the associated relief expeditions it generated.

The Society was incorporated in Victoria by John Don, retired politician and octogenarian who is currently researching a book on Burke and Wills which aims to dispel many of the myths which have come to surround the Expedition since its its departure from Royal Park, Melbourne over 145 years ago. It was seen as an appropriate move to incorporate the Society in Victoria as the Expedition was a Victorian event, but the Society has members from all over Australia and membership is open to everyone.

Researchers at the Cloncurry Conference

The inaugural AGM was held during the Bedourie Conference in August 2005 and the first Committee was elected. Membership was formalised at this meeting and includes people from a wide range of backgrounds. We currently have members from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia and these members include retired and active surveyors, historians, researchers and scientists.
